Peter Amerongen is a pioneer of net-zero construction and the deep retrofit movement in Canada and a co-founder of Retrofit Canada. His commitment to energy-efficient building began in response to the 1970s oil crisis, starting off a 45-year career in high-performance construction. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions. He continues to serve on several non-profit boards.
His key achievements include:
- Design/build of Canada’s first Energiesprong-inspired large-scale panelized retrofit – the 59-unit Sundance Housing Co-op deep retrofit.
- Design/build of Canada’s first three single-family Energiesprong panelized retrofits.
- Design/build for the Riverdale Net Zero Project under CMHC’s 2007 Equilibrium Housing Initiative – Canada’s first net-zero affordable multi-family project and first net-zero church.
- Envelope design for a 40-unit net-zero affordable housing project in Morinville, Alberta.
Peter has worked with several Alberta net-zero building companies, including Habitat Studio and Butterwick Projects, and is currently working with Renu Engineering and Zu House. He is also:
- A founding member of Edmonton’s Energy Transition Advisory Committee.
- An original member of CHBA’s Net Zero Council Management Committee.
- A Certified Passive House Consultant (PHIUS and PHI).
- An NRCan PEER Industry Working Group member.
His work continues to shape Canada’s low-carbon future.
